Abstract:

Drawings throughout. Diary begun, Apr. 3, 1849, on journey to California as a member of the Fremont Association of New York. Landing at Galveston from the ship, Benjamin R. Milam, the party proceeded overland via the Tucson cut-off. Subsequent volumes record life in the Southern mines; experiences as a member of Major Savage's Mariposa Battalion which visited Yosemite Valley during the Indian uprising (1851); trip to Hannibal, Mo., via Nicaragua and New Orleans, to purchase sheep and return to California, overland (1853); life at Garden Ranch near Forbestown, Butte Co. (1855); trip to New York via Panama and return via Nicaragua (1856).
